In mid-July, we had the pleasure of hosting an intimate gathering of our Dutcher Crossing wine club members for a day of adventure and indulgence in the stunning Alexander Valley. Nestled at a breathtaking elevation of 1,200 feet, this event was as much about the journey as it was about the wine.
Our Winemaker, Nick, showcased his versatility by not just crafting exceptional wines but also by playing chauffeur for the day. He shuttled our eager crew up the winding mountain roads in a rented van, adding a touch of excitement to the experience. Our destination? The picturesque estate of Christiane Costello of Costello Vineyards, perched just below the iconic Geyser Peak.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted with glasses of the crisp and refreshing 2022 Costello Chardonnay. As we sipped, taking in the panoramic views of the estate’s lush vineyards, Debra and Christiane shared the rich history of their decades-long friendship and partnership. Their stories, woven with passion and dedication, brought a deep sense of connection to the land and the wine we were enjoying.
Our adventure continued as we descended to Hidden Hill Vineyards, where grower Dan Vogt welcomed us to explore the Syrah vineyards. Dan, the new steward of Hidden Hill, has embraced the land and its organic vineyards with a fervor that’s truly inspiring. As we wandered through the vines, sipping on the vibrant 2022 Hidden Hill Syrah, Dan shared insights into the complexities of vineyard management. His enthusiasm made the experience even more immersive, connecting us with the very essence of the wine in our glasses.
The day culminated in a beautiful al fresco lunch under the shade of trees, surrounded by the very vineyards that had just captivated our hearts. Seated at a long, rustic table, we enjoyed a delightful picnic lunch, lovingly prepared by Leanna and neatly packed into our new Dutcher Crossing tote bags. The meal was perfectly paired with a selection of exquisite wines: a 2015 Costello Chardonnay from Nick’s personal cellar, a 2019 Costello Chardonnay graciously gifted from Christiane’s collection, and a vertical tasting of Hidden Hill Syrah from 2016, 2017, and 2018.
This day was not just a wine tasting—it was a journey through the vineyards, a celebration of friendships old and new, and a reminder of the deep connection between the land and the wine we cherish. We look forward to more such adventures with our Dutcher Crossing family!
